Über Malabrigo
Malabrigo began where the most beautiful stories are born: in a kitchen pot full of dreams. In 2005, two brothers-in-law dyed their first skeins of wool in Uruguay and had no idea that they would create a phenomenon that would captivate knitters from Japan to Europe. The name “Malabrigo” means “bad shelter” - named after a windy village, but inspired by the magical places of literary masters such as García Márquez. They imagined Malabrigo as a place where the weather drives everyone into the warmth to knit.
Today, Peru produces what knitters around the world are addicted to: hand-dyed yarns with a softness that has to be felt to be understood. Made from the wool of Uruguayan merino sheep that roam freely through the hills and are tended by real shepherds - there is no mulesing here, only respect for the animal. The family business employs mainly women and consciously gives opportunities to people who have fewer opportunities. With over 400 shades of color and solar heating technology, Malabrigo proves that true beauty is created when passion meets responsibility. Each strand carries the warmth of South America and the story of two dreamers.
